Christianity and the Arts

Christianity and the Arts. They don’t always seem to go together. Art always seems to be labeled “liberal” and Christianity isn’t. How can we as Christians use and expand our art skills to glorify God? How can we become relevant, respected members of an established Christian church/community?

Usually when thinking of Christian arts I think of Thomas Kinkade and similar artists, or basket weavers, or knitters, basically anything you’d find in a house that homeschools. And, in my opinion, these examples are a pretty small, very conservative, un-warrior-like (read “pansy”) representation of art.

Yeah, you're right, we are trying to change that. Even in my most experimental film, I can see or sense something that is God-pleasing. It may look like static, just black and white and gray streaking across a screen, but when I watch it I get certain feelings. Wow, totally, like right now, as I'm writing this, I'm realizing how it makes me feel when I'm watching that stuff. It's like worship. I guess that sounds silly, but it's always said that everyone worships differently. And one way I worship is by creating art certain ways and by experiencing the art I make.

It's like that quote from the famous Olympic runner talking about 'when I run, I feel God smiling.' It's like that.

So, I'm kinda feeling a challenge right now, to go and make God-pleasing art, looking for that "Holy Moment" when my simple actions become worship to God.
